Supplies:
Vilene or Aqua Magic wash away stabilizer to fit your hoop
Fabric - 1 piece 5"x 8", 1 piece 5 1/2" x 8" and 3
strips 3" x 11"
Warm and Natural quilt batting - 1 piece 5" x 8"
Pellon craft fuse - 1 piece 5 1/2" x 8", 3 strips 2 1/2" x
11 and 1 pc cut the same size as ribbon
Velcro - 5/8" wide x 1" long
Grosgrain ribbon - 3/4" or 7/8" wide x 4" long (use ribbon
that matches the fabric) |
Before
you start:
Prepare for the card pockets - 1 pc of
fabric & 1 pc of Pellon craft fuse cut to 5 1/2" x 8". Iron
the Pellon craft fuse to the wrong side of the fabric. Starch the 3 strips
of fabric 3" wide x 11" long. Iron the 2 1/2" strips
of Pellon craft fuse to wrong side of the strips keeping one edge even
with the one edge on the fabric. Turn under 1/2" along the opposite
side & top stitch on your sewing machine. Cut the three strips in half
to make 6 strips 2 1/2" x 5 1/2" long.
Prepare the ribbon closure - Take your
3/4" or 7/8" wide grosgrain ribbon 4" long & iron a
small strip of Pellon Craft fuse (cut the same size) to one side of the
ribbon. This becomes the wrong side. Fold the ribbon in half lengthwise
(right side out) and press to crease the fold. Open the ribbon flat and
place the scratchy side your 1" long velcro onto the ribbon just
inside the fold and stitch in place with your sewing machine. Fold the
ribbon in half again and place 3/4" strip of stitch witchery
inside the folded ribbon & press to bond together to make the folded
ribbon act as one piece.
For outside of case - Use 1 pc fabric &
1 pc of warm & natural quilt batting cut to 5" x 8".
Spray the batting with temporary adhesive spray and smooth the fabric on
top. |
 |
 |
| 1. For the case
closure cut your ribbon 4" long and iron Pellon Craft fuse cut the
same size to one side of the ribbon. Fold in half and press to
crease the fold. |
2. Open the
folded ribbon and place the scratchy side of the 1" velcro just
inside the fold and stitch in place with your sewing machine. |
 |
 |
| 3. Place a
short strip of Stitch Witchery inside the fold and press to bond the
ribbon together. |
4. This is the
packaging for the Stitch Witchery - it is 3/4"wide and comes on a
roll. |

|
|
| 5. Cut 3
strips of fabric 3" x 11" & 3 strips of Pellon craft fuse 2
1/2" x 11". Iron craft fuse to wrong side of fabric even
on one edge. Fold the opposite edge over 1/2" and press to
crease. Top stitch the folded edge on your sewing machine. |
6. Cut all
three prepared fabric strips in half to create six strips that are 2
1/2" x 5 1/2" long |
 |
 |
| 7. Open the
credit card pockets design and send to your machine. Hoop one layer
of vilene stitch and stitch the the initial outline of the case. |
8. Take the
fabric previously cut to 5 1/2" x 8" (with Pellon craft fuse
already ironed to wrong side) and center it over the outline just sewn. |
 |
 |
| 9. The next
color stop tacks the fabric down. It also stitches pocket placement
lines on the sides. |
10. Remove
hoop and use a straight edge ruler and pen to extend the placement lines
about 1" long on the stabilizer |
 |
 |
| 11. Place the
first 2 strips of fabric over the design using the placement lines closest
to the center as your guide. Tape in place and put hoop back on
machine. |
12. The next
color stop in the design tacks the first two strips down. |
 |
 |
| 13. Remove
hoop & trim the fabric at the bottom of both strips. Do not trim
the sides (you will trim those later) |
14. Tape the next 2
strips of fabric in place using the middle placement lines as your
guide. Put hoop back on machine. |
 |
 |
| 15. The next
color stop tacks the 2nd set of pockets down. Trim the fabric at the
bottom (only) of both pockets. No need to trim the sides at this time. |
16. Tape the
remaining 2 strips down using the last placement lines as your
guide. The next color stop tacks pockets down and adds basting
stitches to hold the pockets in place. Do NOT trim the bottom of the
pockets in this step! They will be trimmed later! |
 |
 |
| 17. Remove from
hoop and use a straight edge ruler & rotary cutter to trim the fabric
along both long edges close to the stitches. Do not trim the top
& bottom, just trim the stabilizer next to the fabric at the
top/bottom. Set aside. |
18. Now, send
the case design you are using to your machine. Hoop vilene stabilizer and
stitch the first color stop which is the initial outline of the
case. Fold the fabric & batting (5" x 8") in half
lining up the center fold with the center marks on the design and unfold the fabric & batting from the center
to make sure they are centered. |
 |
 |
| 19. The next
color stop tacks the fabric/batting in place, stitches the quilted
background and a stitches a small rectangle at the bottom as a guide for
velcro placement. |
20. Place the
fuzzy velcro piece centered over the small rectangle keeping it even
with the outline at the bottom. Scotch tape in place. The next
color stop secures the velcro with a small zigzag stitch. |
 |
 |
| 21. Next,
stitch the embroidery design onto the case following the instructions
provided in the text file for the design you are using. |
22. Remove
hoop and flip over to back side. You will see two little notches
sewn at the center top to use as a guide for placement of the ribbon
closure. |
 |
 |
23. Tape the ribbon
closure in place between the notches with the ribbon inside the outline
1/4" on back side of hoop.
NOTE: The velcro should be facing you! |
24. Next, take the pocket
pattern (prepared earlier) and center over the outline on the back
side of the hoop. Use the center marks on the design in the hoop to center
the pocket pattern. Tape in place, put hoop back on machine. |
 |
 |
| 25. The next step tacks
the pockets and ribbon closure in place under the hoop and stitches two
zigzag lines in the middle for folding the case when finished. |
26. TIP: Cut 1/4"
thick foam board to fit inside your hoop to support the design when
trimming on the back side of the hoop. This supports the design &
eliminates pushing down too hard when trimming making the
design to move in the hoop which causes registration problems. |
 |
 |
| 27. Place the foam board
in the hoop over the design before flipping over to trim. You may
need to move
the hoop to the edge of your table to allow the part that attaches
the hoop to the machine to extend past the edge of the table so the the
hoops lays flat. |
28. With the foam board in
place, trim the excess fabric from around the outline close to the
stitches on the back side of the hoop. |
 |
 |
| 29. Flip hoop right side
up & trim the fabric from around the outline close to the
stitches. Place hoop on machine. |
30. The next step stitches
the satin stitch outline around the design to cover the raw edges of the
fabric. |
 |
 |
31. Trim the case from the
vilene staying at least 1/16" inch away from the satin
stitches.
DO NOT accidentally cut into the ribbon closure! |
32. Last step - remove the
basting stitches over the pockets and run a warm wet rag along the edges
to dissolve any remaining wash away stabilizer. Let dry. |
