Supplies:
Fabric to match design
Aqua Magic or Vilene wash away stabilizer
Warm & Natural quilt batting
Insul-Bright - insulated batting (see picture at bottom of page)
(Insul-Bright batting was designed specifically for handling hot items.  It has a silver layer in the middle to deflect heat.  The instructions recommended using warm & natural along with the Insul-Bright to absorb heat condensation.)
5x7 hoop size:   4.9"W x 6.9"H
Fabric - 2 pieces 5 1/2" x 7 1/2" & 2 pcs 5 x 5 1/2" for the finger pockets.  Fold the pieces in half and iron to crease (for the finger pockets)
Finished pockets measure 2 1/2" x 5 1/2" long.  If you prefer, sew a decorative stitch along the folded edge for fancier  pockets.
Insul-Bright insulated batting - 1 piece 5 1/2" x 7 1/2"
Warm & Natural quilt batting - 1 piece 5 1/2" x 7 1/2"
Vilene or Aqua Magic to fit your hoop
5.5 x 8+ hoop size:   5.5"W x 7.5"H
Fabric - 2 pieces 6" x 8" and 2 pieces 5" x 6" for the finger pockets.  Fold the 5" x 6" pieces of fabric in half on the long sides and iron to crease (for finger pockets)
Finished pockets measure 2 1/2" x 6" long
If you prefer, sew a decorative stitch along the folded edge for fancier pockets.
Insul-Bright insulated batting - 1 piece 6" x 8"
Warm & Natural quilt batting - 1 piece 6" x 8"
Vilene or Aqua Magic washaway stabilizer - to fit hoop
1. Hoop vilene or aqua magic to fit your hoop.  Stitch the first color stop on the water soluble stabilizer only 2.  Place 1 piece of warm & natural quilt batting and 1 piece of fabric over the outline just sewn.  Use adhesive spray to tack both pieces together and then spray again to keep secure in the hoop.
3.  The next color stop tacks the fabric and batting down. 4.  Sew the design in the middle of the hot mitt.
5. Remove hoop & place 1 piece of Insul-Bright & a piece of fabric on the back side of the hoop centered. Again, use adhesive spray to keep everything in place.  Be mindful to keep the fabric & batting flat under the hoop when you put the hoop back on your machine! 6.  The next color stop sews two lines on each end and secures the fabric and Insul-Bright on the back.  The lines closest to the design are the placement lines for the finger pockets.  (It's hard to see the lines in this picture!)
7.  Scotch tape the finger pockets on all four corners and in the middle, keep the folded edge even with the lines closest to the design.  The next color stop tacks the pockets down (picture not shown of this step) 8.  Remove hoop and trim the excess fabric and batting from the back side of the hoop close to the stitches.
9. Flip hoop over to front side and trim the excess fabric and batting from the front of the hoop as well.  Place hoop back on machine. 10.  The last color in the design stitches the final satin stitch edge and the decorative border around the design in the middle of the hot mitt.
11.  Remove hoop and flip to back side again.  Run your scissors along the edges to cut the hot mitt away from the stabilizer. 12.  Run a warm wet rag along the edges to dissolve the remaining stabilizer.
13.  This picture shows how your fingers and thumb will fit nicely inside the finger pockets to protect them when handling a hot pan or bowl in the oven or microwave. 14. This picture shows the hot mitt in action! (smile)

quilt batting visit:  http://www.warmcompany.com
Please note that in some of the pictures you see will cross hatched quilting lines in the design.  I decided to remove them because the quilting lines compressed the batting more than I liked and they really look so much nicer with a puffier look!
