1. Follow
steps 1-9 for making the frame designs here: Frame
Designs How To
Then complete the project using the remaining instructions shown below. |
 |
 |
| 1. Cut a piece of thin cardboard
to 8x10 (you can use the cardboard insert from a purchased 8x10 frame as a
pattern) |
2. Next,
measure in from each side 1-1/4" and mark with a pen to form an
inside border. You should have a 1-1/4" border along all four edges. |
 |
 |
| 3. Cut
along your lines using a snap blade razor knife so that the center piece
of cardboard is cut away. |
4. Mark the
top with a "T" on both pieces to put the pieces back together
correctly later. |
 |
 |
| 5. Lay the
cardboard border over the design centered both horizontally and
vertically. Make sure the edges of the design and picture openings
are perfectly centered inside the cardboard border. |
6. With the
design centered, mark the outer corners of
the cardboard onto the fabric. This is a close up of how to mark
the corners using the cardboard as your guide.
|
 |
 |
| 7. With a straight edge
ruler and rotary cutter, trim the fabric using the marked corners as your
guide. The fabric should now be the same size as the cardboard. |
8. Next, turn the design over
and mark lines on the stabilizer 1/2" inside the edges of the
fabric. |
|

|
 |
| 9. Trim the
stabilizer on the lines just drawn so that the tear away stabilizer is
1/2" smaller than the fabric along all four edges. You need at
least 1/2" of the fabric showing to glue the design to the cardboard. |
10. Use 3M
Scotch Glue Stick (green label that says: Permanent adhesive, for paper,
photos and fabric).
Michael's Craft Store carries the 3M Scotch Glue stick.
Hobby Lobby carries a similar glue stick - UHU Glue Stick (yellow label)
that will work too. |
 |
 |
| 11. Rub the
glue along all four edges of the cardboard. |
12. Place
the design centered over the cardboard and press the edges of the fabric
into the glue until is flat & even with edges of the cardboard.
(I forgot to take a picture of this step!) |
 |
 |
| 13. Next,
cut two strips of lace 8" long & 2 strips 10" long. Rub more
glue on the outer edges of the fabric and place the 8" strips on,
then the 10" strips keeping the lace even with the outer edges of the
cardboard. |
14. This is a close up of how
the lace should look after it is glued in place. |
 |
 |
| 15. Tape your billfold
size photos centered over the picture openings. Insert the inner piece of
cardboard you cut away earlier and tape to secure. |
16. The design is now
ready to be placed in a purchased standard 8x10 photo frame! |
|
Other trimming ideas! |
 |
 |
| We used fabric
instead of lace on this design. Just cut 2 strips of fabric
2.5" x 8" & 2 strips 2.5" x 10", fold in half,
fuse together with stitch witchery and trim to 1" wide. Glue
the 10" strips on first, then the 8" strips. Keep the fabric
strip edges even with the edges of the cardboard. |
We used Easy Felt
on this one!! Just cut the Eazy felt 8x10 and then cut out the
middle leaving a 1 inch border along each side. Or you can go to
your local frame shop and have a regular mat board custom cut to fit for a
more professional finished look. |
