Supplies:
Vilene or Aqua Magic wash away stabilizer large enough to fit your
hoop.
1 piece fabric - 5 /12" x 8 1/2" (5 1/2" x 7 1/2" for
5x7 hoops)
1 piece of headliner fabric - 5 /12" x 8 1/2" (5 1/2" x 7
1/2" for 5x7 hoops)
2" wide velcro (cut lengthwise to make strips 1" wide) - cut 1 pc 6 1/2" long (5 1/2" long for 5x7
hoops)
Use the narrower 3/4" velcro if that is all you can find. I
just think the 1" width is easier to keep straight!
If headliner fabric is not
available in your area try thermolam or fleece batting. I
bought my headliner fabric at JoAnns Fabrics in the upholstery department.
Headliner fabric consists of knit fabric bonded to 1/4" soft
gray flexible foam. There were three colors available at my local JoAnns fabric store:
tan, black and gray.
Things
to consider before you begin:
1. If possible, adjust presser foot height to accommodate the thickness to keep
foot from dragging over the surface.
2. Slow machine at least 1X except for the
final satin outline. You are sewing through thicker than normal fabric
so take it easy!
3. Please feel free to use different fabric colors/thread colors to match the
car interior in which
these will be used.
4. Use the same color bobbin thread as the final satin
outline so that it looks good and matches on both sides.
1. Cut 2" wide velcro strip
6 1/2" long (5 1/2" - 5x7 hoops)
Then cut it down the center to create two 1" wide strips.
2. Cut 1 piece of fabric
& 1 piece of headliner fabric to
5 1/2" x 8 1/2" (5 1/2" x 7 1/2" for 5x7 hoops)
3. Hoop one piece of
vilene or Aqua Magic wash away stabilizer to fit your hoop. Stitch
the first color in the design on the stabilizer only - no fabric yet!
4. Remove the hoop but do
not remove anything from the hoop. Place your precut fabric centered
over the outline. Spray the fabric and the headliner fabric with temporary
adhesive spray to keep them in place.
5. Flip hoop over & center
the headliner fabric over the outline with the foam
side facing the stabilizer. Round the corners
of the headliner fabric so that it doesn't extend under the hoop at the
corners. The headliner fabric should be completely inside the hoop so it
doesn't hold the hoop up off of the bed of the machine more than
necessary.
6. The next color will sew
the outline again to secure the fabric and headliner in the hoop. (The
outline will make 2 passes to secure well) Now, stitch the
rest of the design in the center of the belt wrap as instructed in the
text files that are sent with your orders.
7. Remove hoop and flip
over to the back side. Trim the top fabric in between the indents on the
front. As you can see, the outline that was sewn to secure the fabric also
stitched little indents on each end as shown above.
8. Tape the soft velcro half
(fuzzy side up) in between the indents along the long edge (on
the same side as design was sewn). The velcro should extend
over the outline about 1/6" of an inch. Place hoop back on
machine.
9. The next
color in the design stitches a zigzag stitch to secure the fuzzy piece of
velcro to the back of the design.
10. Remove
hoop & trim the excess headliner fabric & top fabric close to the
outline on both sides of the hoop. Leave the tape on the fuzzy velcro to
keep it flat for now. Place the hoop back on your machine.
11. The last
color sews the final satin outline. When finished, flip hoop over
& trim the design from the stabilizer. Stay at least 1/6" of an
inch from the edge so you don't accidentally cut into the satin stitches!!
12. You're almost
finished!! Now place the scratchy half of the velcro between the
indents on the opposite side. Hold the velcro even with the inside
edge of the satin stitches & stitch it in place with your sewing
machine.
Final
step - Take a warm wet rag and run it along the edges to dissolve the
remaining wash away stabilizer. Do not get the belt wrap too
wet!! Just wet it enough to dissolve the left over fuzzy pieces of
stabilizer. Set aside to dry.
To
place the belt wrap on the seat belt in the car: Tuck the seat belt strap
under the front piece of velcro & fold the wrap in half. Keep the
edges even and then press the velcro together until secure. I hope you
enjoy making these as much as I enjoyed creating them!
NOTE!
For the baby wraps the headliner fabric is added to the back of the hoop
AFTER the decorative design is stitched on the front for softer
look. Just follow the step by step instructions in the text files
included with the designs.
